Well, look no further; in this article, we will delve into various deck ideas that will help you create the ultimate outdoor space to relax in.

Quick Summary

  • There are various deck designs to suit different outdoor spaces and preferences, such as wraparound decks, balcony-style decks with views, pool decks, and dining decks. Each type offers unique ways to enhance outdoor living areas.
  • Adding features like fire pits, privacy screens, or integrating natural elements like trees can create cozy and functional spaces. These additions can improve comfort, visual appeal, and usability across different weather conditions and times of day.
  • Choosing the right deck materials (like composite or cedarwood) and considering layout factors like space, railing, and outdoor furniture are crucial for durability, safety, and maximizing enjoyment of the outdoor space.

Ideas for Outdoor Space Design

Wooden backyard deck design

You can have decks that are either connected or detached from your house, as well as various types of outdoor decks ranging from wraparounds to pool decks of various sizes, shapes, and wood patterns. Here are some of my favourite deck designs.

Add a Sleek Fire Pit

Adding a fire table or pit can create a focal point to your deck. Not only is a fire pit a great way to extend the deck’s use and keep you warm on chilly nights, but throw in a bunch of pillows, blankets, and a cup of cocoa and boom!, you have a cozy spot right out of a Hallmark movie.

Pairing this with a conversation pit with built-in seating creates a warm atmosphere.

Balcony Style Deck With a View

If you have a balcony, you could consider renovating it into a small deck to get a raised deck look. You can convert this small space into an outdoor reading nook with plenty of wow factor.

Adding light colours for decking and railings can make your small deck look more spacious. You can add cosy outdoor seating to your deck and enjoy the view.

Adding a glass partition instead of a railing would be an option to make excellent use of its surroundings as it doesn’t obstruct the view and creates the illusion of more open space.

A spiral staircase leading to another deck or porch at the bottom adds visual interest to the spot as well.

Add a Privacy Fence to Your Outdoor Living Space

Do you live in a busy area and want more of a secluded vibe to your outdoor spaces? Well, a privacy screen can help. This enclosed deck creates a sense of intimacy while also keeping you protected from both prying eyes and the sun.

Adding potted plants to your wooden deck will make all the difference and make the outdoor room feel like an extension of the interior.

Extend Decking to the Pool Area

Do you already have a pool? You could also extend the space around the pool and even add a sunken hot tub for a nice visual flow of space. Natural wood is the preferred material, as it doesn’t retain heat in the hot sun.

If you don’t already have one, you can consider investing in a swimming pool for your rooftop deck or even embedding a pool in your backyard deck. Lounge chairs and throw pillows make it the perfect spot for relaxing under the sun.

Build Around a Tree

With some due diligence, you can save that cherished tree by building your backyard deck around it. This creates a unique deck idea that makes the built structure feel integrated with the outdoor setting.

Remember to have bold throw pillows to add pops of colour that complement your backyard.

Dining on a Deck

Do you prefer eating your meals while enjoying the outdoor space and fresh air? You should look into moving your dining table to the outdoor deck. Perhaps invest in rattan furniture if you want to take up less space.

Pair this with outdoor lighting, like string lights, and an outdoor rug to create a warm space.

Moving your dining space to outdoor areas is an excellent way to spend time with family and friends. You could also consider installing a pergola to provide partial shade and privacy to match the exterior of your house.

Wraparound Deck

Why stick with a traditional deck design that is only on one side when you can extend it all the way around? This type of deck provides room for multiple seating areas and easy access to different rooms. It also honours any surrounding trees and other eye-catching visuals.

You can also extend this to include platform decks placed above the ground, or you could make it a standalone.

Screen-In Deck

If you live in a region with frequent rain and mosquitoes, you can install screens to keep bugs and water from getting in. Certain screens can also protect your furniture and rugs from UV-Rays. These screens are low maintenance as there is less dust and moisture build-up.

FAQs

For the best deck material: pressure-treated wood is cheap but needs maintenance, composite is low-maintenance and resists damage, cedarwood is natural but costly, and PVC offers top durability with minimal upkeep.

For deck design, prioritize durable materials, choose safe railing options, and ensure outdoor furniture is waterproof and long-lasting.

The ideal deck spacing is typically 300-400 square feet, providing enough room for guests and additional features like a pool or dining area.

Conclusion

Decks can be built from a range of different materials depending on your budget and the scale of the project. Whether you want a composite deck or an antique style, there are countless designs to inspire your next deck project.
